Ordinary naturalisation: C permit, years of residence, integration

Updated on October 24, 2026

Swiss citizenship is acquired under the Citizenship Act, not under the FNIA alone. Ordinary naturalisation requires a settlement permit, residence for the period set by the statute in Switzerland and in the municipality, and successful integration: public order, economic participation or training, and knowledge of a national language. The Confederation, the canton and the municipality each decide their part. Facilitated naturalisation covers particular cases, including the spouse of a Swiss citizen. Time limits and language tests are in the statute and with the canton, because the municipal procedure varies.

Where the rule is

A C permit does not confer citizenship. Filing too early makes the application inadmissible. Years on social assistance in the period examined by the statute can be an obstacle.
