Renew the permit: before it expires, with the canton

Updated on October 24, 2026

A residence permit expires. The person or the employer files the renewal with the cantonal migration service before that date, with the documents requested. The authority may renew, shorten, attach conditions or refuse if a ground in the FNIA is met, for example a lack of means, a serious conviction or false information when the person was admitted. Letting the permit lapse without a step leaves the person in an irregular stay. An appeal against a refusal is cantonal, within the period stated on the decision.

Where the rule is

The appeal period is on the decision. It is often 30 days, but only the notice on the decision counts. An email to the office does not suspend the period unless cantonal procedure says so.
