Studying in Switzerland: admission, means of support, limited side work

Updated on October 24, 2026

The FNIA allows a stay for training when the person is admitted to a recognised institution and has sufficient means, including health insurance. The permit is limited to the training. A side job is possible only within the limits set by the authority. This stay does not always count as years toward a C permit. At the end of the studies, remaining in Switzerland to work requires a new permit, not a simple extension of the student status. The SEM and the canton publish the documents required.

Where the rule is

Proof of enrolment is not enough if the means are not shown for the period requested. Undertakings of support are checked.
