VAT: mandatory from CHF 100,000 of taxable turnover
Updated on October 24, 2026
The Federal Act on Value Added Tax covers anyone who carries on a business and supplies taxable services on Swiss territory, once turnover from those supplies reaches CHF 100,000 a year. Below that, registration is optional. The threshold is calculated on taxable supplies, not on profit. Registration is with the Federal Tax Administration. A newly formed company watches the threshold from the first financial year. The wording of the threshold is the VAT Act on Fedlex. Rates and exceptions are in the same statute.

Reaching the threshold during the year requires registration within the period set by the administration, not at the next year-end. Charging VAT without being registered is not allowed.
